Return Of Tony Steward To NASCAR Ends Prematurely
The emotional return of Tony Stewart to NASCAR ended prematurely following a blown tire. The race on Sunday was the first competition Stewart joined since his car hit and killed Kevin War Jr. on August 8.
Stewart was greeted by cheers when he was introduced at the Oral-B USA 500. However, the front right tire of his car blew after 172 laps at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The race was eventually won by Kasey Kahne.
Although Stewart begged off from talking with a reporter following the race, he spoke briefly about the accident at the Canandaigua Motorsports Park that resulted to the death of Ward. He said it was among the most difficult tragedies he faced as a person and a professional.
A video from a spectator during the night of the death of Ward showed the right rear tire of the car of Stewart hitting Ward. Ward was killed due to massive blunt trauma. Following the death of Ward, Stewart did not join the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen. He also did not join the races in Tennessee and Michigan,
Philip C. Povero, Ontario County Sheriff, said there was no proof that a crime was committed in the incident. Ward started joining go-kart events at the age of four and moved to sprint cars when he was twelve. He was already in his fifth season at the Empire Sprint series when the accident happened.
The father of Ward blamed Stewart for the death of his son. He said Tony Stewart was the only driver who did not see his son. Stewart said he wanted the family of Ward to know that he was thinking and praying for them every day.
Tony Stewart said that he cannot imagine the pain and anguish that the family of Kevin Ward is experiencing following the fatal crash at the NASCAR race in New York.
