Rising Consumption of Tobacco Led to Downfall of Cigarettes
Due to rising consumption of pipe tobacco and cigarette-like cigars, cigarette consumption has declined. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that there is a 27.5% decrease in total consumption of all types of smoked tobacco product between 2000 and 2011. In contrary, there is a 123 percent increase in non-cigarette consumption.
Tim McAfee, CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health’s director, said that the increase in cigar smoking among youth and adults is alarming. Reports have showed that the answer to end tobacco epidemic is to get young adult to stop smoking or better yet, do not initiate smoking. Studies show that large percentage of smokers has started smoking before they are 26 years of age.
Furthermore, there is a disparity between using other forms of tobacco and cigarettes. Taxes that were imposed to pipe tobacco and other types other than cigarettes are lower.
Tobacco consumption is still the leading cause of preventive mortality and morbidity in the United States. Several types of malignancies, heart disease, respiratory disease and reproductive effects are some of the major consequences of tobacco use. It also contributes to worsening of chronic health conditions.
Approximately 443,000 Americans are killed due to secondhand tobacco smoke as well as cigarette use.
