Robbie Rogers, a midfielder for the U.S. national team and for Stevanage a third division club in England has recently revealed that he is gay and that he will be retiring from soccer on a journey of self-discovery.

Rogers has played in the MLS for five seasons and has appeared in the U.S. national team 18 times, scoring a goal during Jurgen Klinsmann’s coaching era, in 2011.

The 25 year old player wrote on his website that the fear of being judged kept him from coming out as a gay athlete for so long. He also added that he feels relieved that he doesn't have to carry that secret around.

His statement received an impressive amount of support with fans and colleagues and friends. Even his former teammates like Sacha Kljestan, who also played as a midfielder for the U.S. national team twittered “100 percent love and support for one of my best friends Robbie Rogers. You will be missed on the pitch. Amazing talent, amazing person.”

Robbie Rogers isn't the only gay soccer player to come out, as David Testo a former Major League Soccer player also came out in 2011, however he came out after retiring from professional sports.
