Rory McIlroy Wins The British Open

Rory McIlroy warded off a late challenge by Sergio Garcia to win the British Open recently. Garcia cut the six-stroke lead of the Northern Irishman to two, but it was not enough for the Spaniard to take the title.

McIlroy was happy with the cushion he built in the tournament since his rivals were also aiming to win the Claret Jug along with the 975,000-pound first prize. He became the third youngest player to win three of the four majors in the modern era.

Garcia was closing in on McIlroy before he encountered problems on the 15th where he had a bogey after hitting a greenside bunker. He ended up in the runners-up spot together with Rickie Fowler.

Rory McIlroy was given a stirring reception at Liverpool when he went up to his first tee. The win allowed the 25-year-old Manchester United fan to rise up to second in rankings. He started the tournament with a birdie and dropped shots at the 5th and 6th. He encountered some problems on the seventh tee, but was able to save a par.

Garcia was considered too be the biggest rival of McIlroy as he had a flawless 32 at the turn. He was able to collect an eagle three at the tenth, which stirred up the crowd. However, he ran into problems in the next hole where he was short by forty feet from the flag. His bogey on the 15th effectively threw a monkey wrench at his challenge.

Garcia said the 15th was a mistake, but it was not easy to deal with a situation where you should not make any mistakes. Following his win, Rory McIlroy revealed he did not expect to be at this level at this point of his career but the Open championship is one of the dreams of many golfers as they grow up.
