Russell Brand to Host 2012 MTV Movie Awards: “I’ll Be More Impressive than The Avengers”
Russell Brand is scheduled to host the MTV Movie Awards when it airs in June, the network announced on Thursday. This will be the first time Brand will host the movie awards.
The British comedian, known for vulgar, crude and off-the-cuff humor, guaranteed a program "more impressive than 'The Avengers,'" hinting a nod to the summer blockbuster that features Marvel comic book characters which hit the box office by storm.
"With his amazing ability to span the full spectrum of comedy from the most high to low brow, Russell's smart, unpredictable wit uniquely connects him to our audience," added Stephen Friedman, the president of MTV.
The MTV Movie Awards, which this year takes place in Los Angeles on June 3, is one of the youth-oriented cable TV channel's most-watched programs. The MTV channel also serves as a launch pad for many of Hollywood's movie summer films aimed mostly at young audiences.
This year's nominees are led by the female comedy "Bridesmaids," and the post-apocalyptic film "The Hunger Games" with eight nominations each. The awards show also celebrates irreverent and quirky categories such as Best Kiss and Best Fight.
Brand will be joined by a star-studded list of presenters handing out MTV's golden statuettes, including Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg, while New York indie-pop band will be performing at the show.
Previous hosts of the show that Brand can compare himself with include Aziz Ansari, Jimmy Fallon, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lindsay Lohan, and Jason Sudeikis.
