Saints Coach Payton Appeals NFL suspensions

Saints coach Sean Payton is trying to appeal suspension for the whole season from the NFL for his role in New Orleans' bounty system. Along with him are Mickey Loomis, the General Manager, Joe Vitt, assistant coach and the Saints organization decided to appeal on Friday.

Payton will ask guidance from Goodell regarding the scope of the suspension, which is still effective through next year's Super Bowl, reports say.

Greg Bensel, Saints spokesman, did confirm, however, that Loomis was appealing his eight-game suspension.  Separately, the team would challenge its $500,000 fine and loss of second-round draft picks this year.

Vitt, who received suspension for six games, is doing the same. David Cornwell, who represents Vitt as NFL Coaches Association head, has confirmed the move in an email to AP.

Gregg Williams, former defensive coordinator who left the Saints after last season to join the St. Louis Rams, coordinated the bounty program and has received indefinite suspension.

The NFL could not immediately provide exact details on how Payton's decision to forward an appeal on Friday would affect the timeline for the play out.

"The decision to appeal is for Sean Payton to make and announce as he deems appropriate," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. "If there are appeals, the commissioner will arrange for expedited hearings, as he stated at the league meeting."
