Snyder picked to direct new Superman film
Zack Snyder, the director of ‘300’ and ‘Watchmen’, has been picked by producer Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. to helm the new Superman movie slated for showing in 2011.
Snyder was chosen over other notable directors like Robert Zemeckis, Tony Scott, Darren Aronofsky, Ben Affleck, and Matt Reeves.
The new Superman film is a top priority for Warner Bros. because it will serve as the basis for multiple films in the future based on the DC comic book universe.
Warner Bros. should be able to release the new film by 2011 to avoid losing some copyrights owed to the heirs of Superman creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel.
Nolan, the director of the critically-acclaimed ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight’, worked with David Goyer to create a new story for the character.
The last film, ‘Superman Returns’, earned $200 million in the U.S., but was not enough to warrant a sequel.
Nolan and Warner Bros. plan to reboot the franchise in much the same way as how Nolan did with Batman.
Some critics have said that the nature of Superman may not be relevant in today’s time of morally ambiguous heroes in the movie world.
Goyer will ink the script that reportedly will have a link with Richard Donner’s original Superman films.
General Zod, a character which was featured in the first two Superman films, is rumored to be the villain in the new movie.
Snyder directed the surprise hit ‘300’, a film adaptation of the Frank Miller comic book, and ‘Watchmen’, the silver screen adaptation of the miniseries created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.
