Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Have Started

The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics have started with one of the most spectacular opening ceremonies in the history of the Winter Olympics Games. The legendary Olympic torch was carried into the stadium of the small Russian city, and lit the cauldron that signals the games have begun.

The fireworks show that proceeded the lighting was one of the most impressive in the history of the Games, lighting the sky for a good couple of minutes. Before the fireworks show the enthusiastic crowd was delighted by a “War and Peace” ballet where dancers wore illuminated costumes, turning the stage into a beautifully lit spectacle that at times looked like a jellyfish display.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach also delivered his message of tolerance during the opening ceremony. He stated that every athlete here has arrived with an Olympic dream and that even as competitors they can live together in harmony and tolerance.

The U.S. delegation’s entrance was received with mixed reviews at home with the Ralph Lauren wear, especially the knit wool cardigan with stars and stripes design which was criticized for being "too much". Helene Elliot from The New York Times said that the sweaters were “better in theory than in practice”. Another small faux-pas of the ceremony was a giant illuminated snowflake that failed to open in the circles of the Olympic symbol.
