“Son of God” Aims For $25 Million In Weekend Sales

The Biblical drama of Fox, “Son of God,” is expected to walk off with $21 to $25 million at the box office during the Oscar weekend. It will come close to the heels of “Non-Stop,” which is expected to get around $25 million.

Box office sales of Liam Neeson action movie for Friday are expected to be around $9 million as compared to the $7.5 million that the drama of the life of Jesus Christ. However, the sales figure for the New Testament retelling includes the $1.2 million sales in late shows in Thursday. Executives increased their forecast of the sales of the movie after the results of the first day on the big screen became available.

Both “Son of God” and “Non-Stop” are expected to beat “The Lego Movie,” which has led the box office for three straight weekends. Although Friday results were at $4.3 million, sales are expected to increase over the weekend and give it around $20 million in weekend sales.

Box office sales of “The Lego Movie” are expected to reach around $208 million in the US market. International sales are nearing the $100 million mark.

“Non-Stop” was promoted by Universal as an action-thriller similar to “Taken,” which grossed $145 million in the local market in 2009. The sequel that opened in 2012 copped $140 million in domestic ticket sales.

Movietickets.com and Fandango revealed that advance online ticket sales of “Son of God” were solid. The project was aggressively promoted by producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. Downey and Burnett were able to seal a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox last September for the movie.

The movie follows the story of Jesus from his birth until the Resurrection. Diogo Morgado plays the role of Jesus on the “Son of God” movie.
