Stan Van Gundy New Coach And President For The Pistons

The Detroit Pistons hired Stan Van Gundy as their new coach and president of all basketball operations with an official announcement being expected this Thursday. Tom Gores, the owner of the Pistons said that Van Gundy is a “proven winner” that instills “passion, purpose and toughness” in his team.

Van Gundy who was also offered a position with the Warriors should sign a five year contract that stands to make him $35 million. According to several media outlets, Van Gundy wasn’t swayed by the financial gains or the roster of players, however, he chose Detroit instead of Golden State due to full control over all basketball operations, something that he wouldn’t have had with the Warriors.

Full control doesn’t just grant him more power in determining the future of the team but also increased job security.

Van Gundy said that he is honored to be working with the Pistons and that he embraces Tom Gores’ vision of laying the foundation for a strong team while also seeking immediate improvement.

Van Gundy now joins Gregg Popovich from the Spurs and the Clippers’ Doc Rivers in a small club of coaches that have full control over all basketball operations. According to yet unconfirmed news, Gundy will also be hiring Otis Smith as General Manager to help him out in his five year journey.
