Steve Jobs Biopic Places Seventh On The Box Office
The Steve Jobs biopic, “Jobs,” did not perform well at the box office as it did not meet expectations of the distributor during its opening weekend on the big screen.
Box Office Mojo revealed that ticket sales of the movie, which has Ashton Kutcher playing the title role, reached around $6.7 million over the weekend. This was lower than the projections of the distributor of at least $8 million for the initial weekend of the movie on the big screen. Although the movie about the co-founder of Apple opened in 2,381 locations, ticket sales were good enough for seventh place against “We’re The Millers” and “The Butler.”
Box Office Mojo indicated that although the disappointing performance of “Jobs” was not unexpected, they did not expect the Steve Jobs biopic to earn less than a third of what “The Social Network” earned when it was released into the big screen.
Despite the below par performance, the Steve Jobs biopic was able to recover over half of the initial budget of the movie, which was reportedly at around $12 million.
Lackluster reviews may have affected ticket sales of the movie, which received a 25 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes. A New York Times review reportedly indicated that the movie was as attractive as a PowerPoint presentation. On the other hand, the Washington Post indicated that Michael Stern, the director of “Jobs,” spent too much effort on the backroom personnel dealings rather than situations that will increase the understanding about the main character of the movie.
Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple and consultant on a similar project, indicated that the Birkenstocks of Kutcher may have played a part in the poor showing of the movie.
He said that the image that Ashton presented for Steve Jobs may have affected the performance of “Jobs” on the box office.
