Storm “Kai-tak” Brings More Landslides and Floods to the Philippines
A tropical storm smashed the Philippines on Wednesday, bringing heavy rains resulting to the renewal of floods and landslides in the country that was hit by destructive monsoon weather.
Bureau of state weather said, tropical storm Kai-tak brought landfalls to the northeast island of Luzon early in the morning together with powerful winds and heavy rains that measure up to 35 millimeters in an hour.
However, after a week of flooding which covered almost the whole area of the city and left with 95 people dead, the Manila and areas surrounding the city were not directly smashed but they were swamped with irregular fall of heavy rain.
Melchito Castro, civil defense head of the northern Ilocos region said, “We have been experiencing really heavy rains since last night, and our rescuers have evacuated some residents after neck-deep flooding was reported.”
Castro said four towns were hit by flooding but there were no reports of casualties. Portions of their major highway were hit by landslides which result to traffic.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council confirmed that there were many low-lying farming lands remained flooded. Also, the rains are expected to fall for few more days.
