Strike Against Syria May Result In Attack On Israel

A strike against Syria may result in a retaliatory strike against Israel, warned Iranian commanders and lawmakers. The warning comes as momentum has increased for a possible military intervention in Syria after the reported use of chemical weapons on civilians by the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

The government of Iran is allied with the government of Syria. Hardliners in Iran consider Syria as its first trench if war will erupt with the Western countries. Iran considers Israel as the reason for the war in Syria. It also says that Israel wants overthrow President Assad.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that Israel is prepared for any scenario. He added that although Israel is not a part of the conflict in Syria, they are looking into possible attempts in attacking the country.

Since Iran is active in its opposition against the use of chemical weapons, it will face difficulties in explaining its support for the government of Syria if evidence is found that these weapons were used. A possible strike against Syria was based on allegations of the use of these weapons by the Syrian government against civilians.

Analysts revealed that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani thinks that Syria is an obstacle to reforms within Iran. A strike against Syria is considered by hardliners as an attack against Iran. The two countries have a pact of defending each other against any attacks by another country.

Iran and Hezbollah are providing aid to President Assad in the conflict in Syria. Hezbollah is a militant Shiite organization in Lebanon that is an ideological partner of Iran. Military advisers from Iran were noted in Syria while Hezbollah fighters have assisted the armed forces of Syria in its fight against the rebels.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, predicted an escalation of the Syrian conflict if aid is continuously given by other regional nations to the opposition in Syria. This pronouncement came as Western nations prepare for a possible strike against Syria for its alleged use of chemical weapons.
