Stunning Ending For Miss Universe 2015
Steve Harvey had to apologize after he made a mistake during the Miss Universe 2015 pageant. Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez was initially announced as the winner of the prestigious pageant by the host, but he later said he had “to apologize.”
He held up the card containing the official results while saying that Miss Colombia was the first runner-up. He added that Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, was the real winner. Wurtzbach appeared surprised at the situation.
The stunning ending to the pageant was broadcast live in numerous countries on Sunday night.
Wurtzbach appeared shocked when the correction was announced by Harvey before walking towards the front of the stage and waited for the crown to be given to her. Harvey moved to the side as the crowd cheered. The card with the results showed the names of the winner and first runner-up of Miss Universe 2015 in small type.
Harvey said it was a “horrible mistake” as he held himself responsible for it. Social networking site immediately saw numerous reactions with Darren Rovell of ESPN calling it “the worst mistake” in the history of TV awards shows. Harvey is a comedian renowned as a host of “Family Feud” and a number of radio and TV talk shows.
As observers noted that Harvey was more experienced in taped shows than live television, the comedian tweeted his apology to both Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia for the mistake. He also apologized to the viewers who were disappointed with the error. He added it was “an honest mistake.”
A statement of apology was also issued by pageant organizers to Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia.
The Miss Universe 2015 organizers added that errors may happen in a live telecast, which was shown with the announcement of the wrong winner.
Earvin Magic Johnson came to the defense of Harvey as he tweeted that mistakes can happen in our careers and lives. On the other hand, New York Times op-ed columnist Charles Blow warned people on being too hard on Harvey. He tweeted that while Harvey made a big mistake, everyone makes similar mistakes.
However, a number of jokes were made at the expense of Harvey.
The mistake occurred at a critical moment for the pageant. Donald Trump together with NBCUniversal owned the pageant before the partners separated amid the campaign controversy of the billionaire. After the split, WME/IMG became the new owner of the pageant.
Veteran TV reporter Joe Adalian of the Vulture said he would not be shocked if the mix-up was a planned stunt. Trump praised the Miss Universe 2015 pageant before the mistake. However, he re-tweeted a fan after the error.
Trump followed up on the mistake tweeting that what happened during the Miss Universe 2015 pageant was very sad. He added that it “would never have happened.”
I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible.

If only Steve Harvey had experience reading correct answers off of cards in front of a live audience.

Very sad what happened last night at the Miss Universe Pageant. I sold it 6 months ago for a record price. This would never have happened!
