Syria Bombards Damascus Suburbs As Rebels Draw Near
The situation in Syria seems to be getting far worse before it will get any better. As rebel troops seem to be getting a slight advantage and are moving towards Damascus, the Syrian military rebuttal seems to be getting more violent and intense.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based in Britain reported that warplanes bombed rebel bases on the outskirts of Damascus, and across the country, killing 12 and injuring countless others.
One of the neighborhoods bombarded was Douma, a part of the country that Syrian troops have been trying to take back from rebel control for weeks.
Maath al-Shami an activist based in Damascus said that government troops used rockets and mortar while fighting rebels in the Qasioun mountains, near the suburbs of Daraya and Kfar Sousseh.
Fighting has also occurred in Aqraba and Beit Saham. The capture of Daraya by government forces is a big step in protecting Damascus, as it holds a key position close to both a military air base as well as the government headquarters.
Rebel fighting has increased in the northern part of Syria as it gets closer to the military airbase of Taftanaz in the province of Idlib, and the airport of Aleppo, Syria’s biggest city and commercial center.
