Taylor Swift, BMI awarded songwriter, grieves for deceased friend
Taylor Swift was awarded at the BMI Awards held on Tuesday as this year’s country songwriter of the year. The 20-year-old singing sensation is the youngest recipient of the award.
She also bagged the country song of the year award for the third straight year for “You Belong To Me”, with co-writer Liz Rose.
“It’s been a really emotional week for me,” the singer told the audience. Swift’s new album “Speak Now” had the biggest opening debut of an album in five years but she also went to a friend’s funeral on Monday. “He was 21, and I used to play my songs for him first,” Swift said about her friend.
Before Swift, Bill Anderson was the youngest to receive songwriter of the year honors at age 23 way back in 1963. Swift also won for herself the pop song of the year award earlier this year, also the youngest to do so.
The songwriter of the year award was given to Swift for her songs “Fifteen”, “White Horse”, “You Belong To Me”, and “Best Days of Your Life”, sung by Kellie Pickler.
Swift is also this year’s entertainer of the year by the Country Music Association and she could be a repeat winner as female vocalist of the year on Wednesday night’s awards event.
Other awards for songwriting were given to Dave Haywood, Miranda Lambert and Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, Toby Keith, and Keith Urban as well as to Sugarland’s Eric Church, Zac Brown, Luke Bryan and Kristian Bush.
