Thailand’s King Bhumibol Declares War Against Massive Flooding
Bangkok - The whole country of Thailand is still plagued by massive countrywide flooding. It is the worst flooding in half a century. For King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who has been hospitalized for two years now due to ailing health condition, the scene was virtually challenging as he views the city submerged in water from his hospital window in the 16th floor. The problem has gone worse and it will be a royal battle versus water for King Bhumibol.
Currently, 400 casualties were already reported and 110,000 people were displaced from their homes due to the widespread flooding across the country. Long before, the king has warned but nobody cared to listen. In 1971, the king has warned that the massive deforestation in the Northern part of Thailand might cause great and devastating flooding in the future.
One of the King’s first development projects in the country was the 1963 reservoir that could trap fresh water from rivers and prevent intrusion of salt in Hua Hin, a seaside resort. His project has pioneered and initiated more developments. Currently, there are about 4,300 projects initiated by the King himself and 40% are related to water resource development. The king has exhibited his ingenuity, scientific and engineering bent as early as the 1990s to give his attention to Bangkok, the country’s very vulnerable capital. The king was very focused on solving many problems but many doubted his ideas and some thought of it as political recriminations and bickering.
