'The American', the spy movie starring George Clooney, ruled the North American box-office charts this weekend, edging crime film 'Takers', according to early figures released on Sunday.
The spy film, praised by critics as visually captivating, earned 12.3 million dollars in its opening weekend in US and Canadian theaters, movie industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
'Takers', who was on the top of the list last week, dropped to second place with 11.5 million dollars. It stars Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba, Chris Brown, and rapper T.I.
The Robert Rodriguez film 'Machete' took 11.3 million dollars on its debut weekend to place third. Critics liked the movie, saying it is “messy”, “violent”, yet “enjoyable” and “a lot of fun”.
Horror movie 'The Last Exorcism', shot documentary-style, fell from second place last week to gain the fourth spot, with a take of 7.6 million dollars.
Romantic comedy 'Going The Distance', starring real-life, on-again-off-again sweethearts Drew Barrymore and Justin Long was fifth, taking in 6.9 million dollars in its opening weekend.
The action flick 'The Expendables', starring Sylvester Stallone and other aging action stars about a mercenary group fighting a South American dictator, earned 6.8 million dollars during its fourth week of release.
Will Ferrell's slapstick comedy film 'The Other Guys', who also stars Mark Wahlberg, was seventh, with a 5.4 million dollar take.
'Eat, Pray, Love', an adaptation of the novel by Elizabeth Gilbert about a divorcee's spiritual journey through Italy, Indonesia, and India starring Julia Roberts, was in eight position, taking in 4.9 million in its fourth week.
