The Death Toll Has Reached 60,000 In Syria

With fighting between the anti-Assad revolutionaries and government forces waging on for close to two years, the Syrian disaster seems to be nowhere near the end.

The latest U.N. analysis released this Wednesday showed frightening figures among which a death toll close to 60,000 people. The U.N. report shows some extra 15,000 victims more than the numbers brought up by the Syrian government.

The actual death toll is possibly higher considering the date and the way the study was done. Experts analyzed about 147,000 deaths that were reported by seven different, independent sources, one of which was the Syrian Government.

After analyzing the numbers and names, and removing duplicate death reports the U.N. commissioned study showed a number of 59,648 deaths that took place since the start of the uprisings in Syria on the 15th of March 2011 until the 30th of November 2012.

The same study shows that in the first year of the Syrian conflict the monthly death toll was close to 1000. One year of continuous fighting later the monthly death toll is believed to be closer to 5000 a month.

On top of the fighting, Syria faces a deep economic and political crisis, with basic commodities like gasoline being in short supply.
