‘The Hangover 2’ boozing to box-office success on Memorial Day weekend
'The Hangover 2' led Hollywood movies in setting the new record for a Memorial Day weekend in the box-office with the film raking $86.5 million, early studio figures showed Sunday.
The sequel to 2009's 'The Hangover' reunites the cast as the setting shifts from Las Vegas to Thailand. The first film earned a strong $45 million debut weekend but 'The Hangover 2' almost doubled the haul.
'Kung Fu Panda 2' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' backed up the troublesome 'wolfpack' at the box-office onslaught with $48 million and $39.3 million respectively.
'Panda' featuring the voices of Jack Black and Angelina Jolie opened this weekend strongly but failed to match its $60.2 million debut three years ago. It continues the adventures of kung fu-fighting animal characters in China.
Before being toppled by 'The Hangover 2', 'Pirates' starring Johnny Depp debuted last week at number 1 but slid to third place this week. It is on track to earn $163.6 million in total by the end of Memorial Day weekend. The movie has already grossed $646.5 million including overseas earnings.
'The Hangover 2' stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms in another booze-heavy escapade this time in Bangkok. It scored the largest debut ever for an R-rated comedy.
Already making buzz with a Cannes Film Festival triumph, Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" featuring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn earned an impressive $88,080 per theater average on limited release. From four theaters, the movie will be shown in more theaters starting Friday.
But Memorial Day weekend clearly belonged to the so-called 'wolfpack'. This early, fans of 'The Hangover 2' are clamoring for the inevitable third film.
