“The Hobbit” Tops Charts With “Anchorman 2” Close Behind
On what proved to be a very busy weekend at the box office, the sequel to The Hobbit called “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” ended up topping all charts even with another sequel, that for Anchorman earning a pretty penny itself.
The Hobbit earned $31.5 million in the second weekend since its release. The pace is a bit slower than the first Hobbit film, however, strong international figures have placed the popular JRR Tolkien inspired saga at the top of the box office with over $400 million earned worldwide, our of which $96 million came just this weekend.
Will Ferrell’s "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" didn't manage to live up to The Hobbit’s figures, however, it did have a strong debut at no. 2 with $26.8 million earned over the weekend and a total that exceeds $40 million since its debut last Tuesday.
The Paramount comedy actually managed to outperform “The Hobbit” on Friday but couldn't keep up over the weekend. The originally turned down sequel stands to outperform the first Anchorman, as most specialists say it will have a longer life and do better in the international market.
The first Anchorman movie earned similar sums in the same time period domestically but only managed to pull in $5.3 million in international markets, a sum that “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” already managed to overtake.
