'The Social Network' judged best picture by L.A. Film Critics Association

"The Social Network", the film by David Fincher about the story behind social media site Facebook, was named the best picture of the year by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Fincher won the honor for best director in a tie with Olivier Assayas, who helmed the terrorist film "Carlos". Colin Firth was best actor for his role as King George VI in "The King's Speech". Kim Hye-ja received the best actress prize for the South Korean drama movie "Mother". Jackie Weaver was best supporting actress for Australia's "Animal Kingdom", while Niels Arestrup was given the nod for best supporting actor for his performance in the French film "A Prophet".  The best foreign language film went to "Carlos" while "Mother" received runner-up honors.

"The Social Network" received two other awards from the prestigious group. Best screenplay for Aaron Sorkin and best musical score for Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor were the other honors for the much-talked about film about the world's biggest social media platform. Alexandre Desplat was also co-winner for the best musical score plum for his work in "The Ghost Writer." "Toy Story 3" was the year's best animated movie. The awarding ceremony will be held on January 15 in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the New York Film Critics Circle, along with the Golden Globes, are influential in who wins the top film industry awards - the Oscars which will be held on February 27. Among the early favorites to win best picture in next year's Academy Awards are "The Social Network" and "The King's Speech."
