“The Walking Dead” Finale Draws Record Audience
The special season five finale of “The Walking Dead” had a fitting title, “Conquer,” as it reportedly dominated the ratings.
The smash hit of AMC copped another ratings record as final episode for season five of the series had its highest rating in history. Around 15.8 million viewers watched the finale of the popular post-apocalyptic thriller. Around 10.4 million of the viewers were within its key demographic of 18 to 49 years old.
The figure is expected to go past the twenty million mark due to delayed viewing. The series was able to outperform its competition.
Among the programs the series had to face during its schedule was the controversial documentary of HBO, "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" along with the iHeartRadio Music Awards. “The Walking Dead” also had to deal with the popular pay-per-view event of WWE, “WrestleMania.”
However, the zombies of the series were unstoppable in the ratings game. The president of AMC, Charlie Collier, released a statement indicating that the current competitive environment makes it difficult to get the attention of the audience. Collier added that it is also difficult to hold on the attention of the audience. But, the series was able to maintain its viewership in the fifth season and ended with its highest rating for its season finale.
A sneak peak of a spinoff of the series, “Fear the Walking Dead,” was also shown during the finale. The spinoff is set to premiere over the summer. Basing on the brief teaser, the spinoff may provide some details on how the zombie outbreak in the series started.
The “Talking Dead” talk show, which follows and talks about the different episodes of “The Walking Dead,” also achieved its highest rating for an episode as it pulled in around 7.5 million viewers.
