Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012 rides Masters momentum

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012 had a strong debut with 225,000 units sold in its first week of sales according to a news release from its maker Electronic Arts Inc. That represents a 17 percent jump from the previous best first-week debut of the golf game franchise back in 2007.

Augusta National Golf Club, the famed host of the Masters tournament, will be added to the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012's set of prestigious golf courses. With the addition, EA wanted to recapture some sales lost last year which was attributed to the poor play of Tiger Woods.

The launch was closely timed with this year's Masters tournament in which South Africa's Charl Schwartzel won his first green jacket.

"We expected fans to be excited about the Masters and for sales to be up significantly," EA Sports president Peter Moore said. "We're pleased that they are."

Since the debut of Augusta National in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012 two weeks ago, about 2 million virtual rounds have been played by gamers, according to Moore.

EA said it used laser-mapping to reproduce in great detail the famed golf course in Augusta, Georgia. Game engineers spent two years in designing the course and integrating in into Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012.

Augusta National is ranked number 1 among golf courses in the U.S. by Golf Digest magazine. It has hosted the Masters Tournament since 1934. Augusta National is a male-only club  with 300 members at any given time and membership is by-invitation only.

But regular golf gamers and fans can now take a shot at "Amen Corner" as Augusta National debuts in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012.
