Tiger Woods Picked for US Ryder Cup Team
Tiger Woods, currently ranked number one in golf, was selected on Tuesday as one of four captains for the US Ryder Cup 12-man team that will defend the championship against Europe next month.
Woods' selection was not automatic, but US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin included Woods in the final lineup.
The golf game of Woods has faltered in recent months following a sex scandal and divorce, and his number one ranking has not been that secure, but he leads all players with 71 tour victories.
He was an automatic pick for the team in his first five Ryder Cup appearances, but this was the first time he needed to be picked. Woods always finished among the leaders in the tournament since his Ryder Cup debut in 1997.
Woods believes he has earned the right to be part of the team.
“If you go back a couple months ago, I was trying to make the team on points, and it wasn't until after the PGA where I didn't, and I felt like my game was turning around then,” Woods said. “And my last two events, I've played, I think I've played much better. And here we are.”
Pavin waited until the deadline to announce his picks after consulting with assistants and some team members.
“You know Tiger is one of 12 guys on the team, and everyone is just as important as another player,” said Pavin. “The objective here is to have 12 players that make up Team USA who are going to go out there and have one goal in mind, and that's to try to win the Ryder Cup over in Wales.”
