Toyota recalls Avalons, Highlanders

About 1.66 million Toyota vehicles — Avalons and Highlanders -- are being recalled by the Japanese carmaker on Thursday, bringing its total number of recalls in the past year to 14 million globally.

Most of the affected units are in Japan and the company’s top market the U.S., the company said in an announcement.

This was the latest in a string of recent recalls made by Toyota who was once known for the safety and quality of their products, and comes roughly two months after the company recalled 1.3 million Matrix and Corolla models with faulty engine control functions which can cause the cars to suddenly stall.

The latest recall involves a defective master cylinder brake seal and at least two other issues. Toyota said there have been no reported accidents due to the malfunctioning parts.

About 740,000 Highlander, Avalon, Lexus GS300, IS250 and IS350 model vehicles sold in the United States have defective cyclinder seals that may allow brake fluids to leak, Toyota said.

Some 11 million out of the 14 million vehicles recalled during the past 12 months were in the United States where regulators have been closely monitoring how Toyota handles the recalls and improve its safety record.

“We don’t consider a recall a four-letter word,” said Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons. “We see it as representative of our commitment to our customers. We want to do everything we can to help restore confidence in our brand and with our customers and their vehicles.”

Instead of waiting for the final notice to arrive, Toyota advised owners and drivers to bring in their cars for repair promptly if they see the brake warning signal flashing.
