Twenty F-16s Delivered To Egypt
With a political situation that seems to escalate and put quite a lot of pressure on the newly appointed president and Islamic government, Egypt will receive 20 F-16 fighter jets from the U.S as part of a 1 billion dollars foreign aid package.
With the first shipment of jets arriving early next year, some political analysts wonder if it is wise to send this amount of military hardware to a country which seems to be on the verge of a revolution.
Malou Innocen, a political analyst for the Cato Institute, was quoted saying “Should an overreaction spiral into a broader conflict between Egypt and Israel, such a scenario would put U.S. officials in an embarrassing position of having supplied massive amounts of military hardware ... to both belligerents”.
The deal was made back in 2010 when Hosni Mubarak was still in office and was part of a foreign aid pack for Egypt. The U.S. ordered and paid for the 20 F-16 fighters and will deliver them to the new democratically appointed president.
Mohamed Morsi is a controversial character of late in Egypt, as he attempted to seize power in a way that reminded Egyptians of the former dictator. After backing off from his power grab when protests started forming in Cairo, Morsi is still trying to pass a much opposed new constitution that increases his power and enforces a much stricter Islamic Sharia Law in Egypt.
