Type 2 diabetes Study Expected to Lower New Cases

In a global scale, there are about 250 million people suffering from diabetes and the reported cases are increasing yearly. A recent medical study has been conducted to understand better type 2 diabetes as its causes are poorly understood making it hard to prevent.  A team of 11 researchers headed by Roman Pfister, analyzed carefully the association of type 2 diabetes and BNP or B-type natriuretic peptide. BNP is a hormone released when our hearts are damaged. The study suggests that high levels of hormone BNP might protect a person against developing type 2 diabetes.  The team used the Mendelian randomization method and concluded that BNP hormone has a protective role in the development and type 2 diabetes.

The findings also suggest that low level of BNP is one of the causes of developing type 2 diabetes.  Due to this recent breakthrough, scientists are now studying the potential of BNP Hormone in discovering medical procedures that can prevent type 2 diabetes from developing.  Scientists are optimistic because they were able to alter the BNP levels of patients who were part of the study group specially those with heart and cardiovascular diseases.

People suffering from diabetes have high and dangerous amount of glucose or sugar in the blood. Sugar levels are controlled by insulin, a hormone released by the pancreas.  People with type 2 diabetes have high blood sugar level due to fat and muscle cell. Aside from insulin, currently people with type 2 diabetes are suggested to control food intake and to exercise.
