U.S. General Killed In Afghanistan Attack

A United States general was killed with several dozen wounded in an attack carried out by a believed Afghani soldier. The tragic event took place at the Marshal Fahim National Defense University’s training center, located in the country’s capital city, Kabul.

The general is believed to be the highest ranking military official killed since the war in Afghanistan started back in 2001. According to a Pentagon spokesperson more than a dozen other military personnel were seriously injured, including a German general while the renegade soldier was killed. The Pentagon did not yet release the name of the killed general.

The recent attack shows the gap in training for Afghani forces as NATO troops withdraw from the region. The injured generals were on a routine inspection at the training center in Kabul.

Soldiers at the scene declared that the gunman opened fired unexpectedly using a light machine gun. The Defense Ministry of Afghanistan said that the attacker was a terrorist dressed in the Afghani army uniform while the Afghani President also condemned the attack.

Official German sources said that the general involved in the attack was one of the 14 persons injured; however, his injuries do not place his life at risk. This is not the first insider attack in the 350,000 strong Afgani military. Attacks have grown in number particularly as Western security forces depart the region, leaving the Afghani army to fend off the Taliban threat with minimal backing from outside forces.
