U.S. Health Care Reform Gains More Support

50% of the American Public Now Favors the Health Care Reform Law

A new poll shows that 50 percent of the American public favor the health care reform law, up from 48 percent in June. The Kaiser Family Foundation poll also shows that 14 percent had no opinion on the matter.

The April edition of the poll found 46 percent liked the law while 40 percent of the public were opposed. The latest poll reveals the highest level of a trend of rising support of the law after a contentious legislative battle.

Regardless of the law being passed, Republicans and Democrats are now fighting to mold public opinion of the law in the run-up to the elections in November.

The Republicans registered a 69 percent opposition of the law, with 53 percent saying they have a “very unfavorable” opinion, up from 50 percent from last month.

Independents who are crucial in the November vote were relatively even with 48 percent in favor, and 37 percent opposed, minimally unchanged from 49 percent to 41 percent during the prior month.

Among this group, extremes of opinion were not significant, with less than a fifth saying they have a very favorable view, while just a little over 25 percent expressing a very unfavorable view.

Democrats in both the House and Senate gathered a majority vote for a Democratic president to sign the law, and during the last month the poll suggests that the legislation drew even more support from the Democrats after they have passed the bill. Just 15 percent of Democrats expressed an unfavorable opinion, decreasing from 19 percent last month, while 73 percent of Democrats had a favorable view.
