United Nations extend help to Philippine Typhoon Victims

United Nations seek aid and assistance for the flood victims that killed thousands of Philippine citizens unleashed by the super typhoon that is somewhat similar to a tsunami.

Soe Nyunt-U, United Nation’s country coordinator, appealed to various foreign governments and other agencies to donate $28.6 million funds for clean water, shelter, food and other assistance to about half a million people affected by the tremendous disaster. According to Soe Nyunt-U, "It was as if the cities were hit by an inland tsunami. The United Nations and humanitarian partners are working very hard to support government-led efforts. The needs however are overwhelming."

The United Nation’s refugee agency UNHCR announced on Thursday that it airlifted from Dubai tarpaulin, blankets, jerry cans, and cooking items for 10,000 citizens who needed emergency shelter.

Further, dead bodies of the victims still float on the waters of southern island of Mindanao. Officials feared for possible outbreak of diseases among those who have survived the traumatic calamity. Health officials have already issued a warning of the risk of epidemics at the camps. Meanwhile, according to police authorities hundreds of people are still missing and may never be found.
