US and South Korea Threatened With North Korean Artillery and Missile Strikes
North Korean artillery and missile units were placed on alert, making them ready to strike against South Korea and the United States, including Guam and Hawaii.
The Supreme Command of the Korean People’s Army made the order after the warning from South Korea that the survival of the north will be ensured if it calls off its threats, provocations and nuclear ambitions. North Korean artillery and strategic rocket units were ordered to be ready to strike the bases in Hawaii, Guam and the US mainland as well as South Korean targets.
The launch of the three-stage rocket last December and the nuclear test last month by the North has increased the tension between the two Korean neighbors. A resolution form the UN Security Council imposed additional sanctions on North Korea. The annual joint military exercises between the US and South Korea, which is meant to forestall any attacks on South Korea, started this month.
A number of threats were issued by the North as Kim Jong-un visited North Korean artillery units that were conducting live-fire exercises.
South Korean President Park Geun-hye urged the North Koreans to change in a speech that marked the third anniversary of the sinking of a corvette of the South Korean navy. Forty six sailors were killed in the incident, which was suspected to have been caused by a North Korean torpedo.
Officials from the North cautioned President Park from repeating the acts of the previous South Korean president, whose hard-line stance together with the provocations from the North resulted to soured relations between the two countries.
Recently the computer networks of some banks and broadcasters in South Korea were paralyzed due to a synchronized virus attack. Even as an investigation was being conducted on the possible involvement of the North, the threat of North Korean artillery and missile attacks were issued.
