Vikings Quarterback Rosenfels Gets Traded to Giants as Backup Quarterback
The Minnesota Vikings traded quarterback Sage Rosenfels along with running back and kick returner Darius Reynaud to the New York Giants, according to the Vikings' website. In return, the Vikings will get an undisclosed 2011 draft pick and a conditional pick in the 2012 draft.
The deal will be official when Rosenfals and Reynaud pass their physicals.
Sage Rosenfals will assume the backup role to starter Eli Manning since his former reliever Jim Sorgi suffered a right shoulder injury during the preseason opener versus the Jets. He was placed on the injured reserve this week which practically ended his season.
Rhett Bomar has since taken Sorgi's spot as Manning's backup but it is expected that the second-year quarterback will fall behind the newly-acquired Rosenfals to back up Manning.
Giants head coach Tom Coughlin earlier said that he was impressed with Bomar's improvement during training camp but the team was still looking at other possibilities.
The Vikings were willing to let go of Rosenfels when Brett Favre agreed to return to the team recently.
Rosenfels, a ten-year veteran, played an impressive preseason game at St. Louis. He completed 23 of 34 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns for the Vikings. But he played poorly in the next three games, and Vikings coach Brad Childress soon said that Tarvaris Jackson would back up Favre again this season.
Reynaud will help the Giants in their deficiencies on kickoff and punt returns. They lost Domenik Hixon to a season-ending knee injury earlier in the summer, and were looking for a returner. Reynaud was the Vikings' primary punt returner during the preseason.
