According to a recently published study by the Northwestern University, vitamin D deficiency or low enough levels are linked to aggressive prostate cancer. The study was published in the Clinical Cancer Research Journal and based its finding on studies carried out on approximately 650 men.

Researchers looked at 650 men with ages that varied from 40 to 79 who either had prostate biopsies because of a doctors recommendation or because of a prostate specific antigen test.

According to researchers, positive biopsies were found in men with vitamin D deficiency or under 20 nanograms per milliliter. Men who tested positive for cancer also registered abnormally reduced vitamin D levels. Normal vitamin D levels should be around 30 to 80 nanograms per milliliter. Adam Murphy, lead researcher said that vitamin D deficiency is an important problem that can affect our general wellness. He added that recent studies suggest it may be tied to the progression or formation of several cancers. He hoped this study would help raise awareness and increase screening and treatment for vitamin D deficiency.

Males, particularly African Americans who suffer from severe vitamin D deficiency are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with a form of prostate cancer in their lifetime.
