Webb Simpson Takes Early Advantage in Phoenix Open
American athlete Webb Simpson, 26, the highest-ranked player in golf field, scored several putts from between 12 and 15 feet on the way to a six-under-par 65 at the TPC Scottsdale.
Simpson mixed 7 birdies at the par-four sixth to finish a stroke in front of compatriots Kevin Na, Derek Lamely, Harrison Frazar, and Australian Jarrod Lyle.
The celebrated athlete defeated the 2008 Masters champion South African Trevor Immelman, who opened with a 67 and Phil Mickelson, winner of the Phoenix Open in 1996 and 2005, who carded a four-birdie 68.
Webb Simpson had his career-best season by bagging two victories on the PGA Tour last year which resulted to supporters and audience’s delight with his performance on the golf field.
Simpson rocketed up the leader board with four consecutive birdies from the par-four 17th.
When he was asked whether it felt strange being the highest-ranked player in the field, Simpson replied that he is getting used to it and that he doesn’t mind about that fact much.
When he became professional in June of 2008, Simpson played on the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour. He successfully recorded two runner-up finishes on the Nationwide Tour. After which, he competed in the PGA Tour's qualifying school and finished T7 earning his Tour card for 2009.
He had a successful start in his career as a rookie with a 5th place finish at the Bob Hope Classic and a 9th place finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He eventually finished the season with four top 10 finishes and retained his tour card ranked 70th on the money list.
At the end of the qualification series, Webb Simpson qualified for the 2011 Presidents Cup team.
