Wimbledon Women’s Semis All set, Court Goddess Sharapova In

A day after the elimination of the Williams sisters, and the first overall ranked Caroline Wozniacki, the three women who dealt the favorites their losses were handed down their own defeats.

Capping the women’s semifinal showdown is Maria Sharapova who dominated 24th seed DominikaCibulkova, 6-1, 6-1.  Slowly returning from her 2008 shoulder injury, Sharapova showed signs of her once unstoppable form.

In 2004, Sharapova rose to stardom when she won the Wimbledon at the age of 17, she won a couple number of grandslams in the following years until the surgery that left her career uncertain in the previous years.

In the other matches of the night, No.9 seed Marion Bartoli, who beat Serena Williams, lost to the 21-year old Sabine Lisicki.  The latter took care of a tough business scoring 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-1.  Lisicki is set to face Maria Sharapova in the semifinals.

Petra Kvitova, the No.8 ranked, beat No.32 TsevetanaPironkova in 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-2 sets.  Pironkova who made an upset of Venus Williams is entering the semifinals for the second consecutive year.

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus booked her first Grand Slam semifinal with a victory over the unseeded TamiraPaszek of Austria in the day’s last match, with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
