Windows 10 Upgrade May Allow Free Clean Installs On Same Device

Microsoft revealed that users getting the free Windows 10 upgrade during the first year it is released into the market can erase and restore the their devices at a later time while keeping the free OS. An engineering executive of the operating systems group of Microsoft, Gabe Aul, revealed through a tweet that users can perform a clean reinstall of the operating system at any time on the same device.

The revelation will benefit users who are concerned about the future of their devices once the one -year free upgrade period lapses. The product key for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will not be needed in restoring the device. Aul indicated that the device can reactivate itself once they have been upgraded to the latest version of the operating system of Microsoft.

A feature on Windows 10 supports the functionality that allows the operating system to be reinstalled while users save their files. They can also delete all the files and start from scratch. Aul added that the same thing will happen to users who restore their devices using an ISO disk image instead of the pre-installed reset feature. This is advantageous to users since clean installation may solve some issues affecting a computer.

But, users should also take note that if they are planning considerable hardware upgrades, it should be done before the release of the new OS. The details on the upgrade policy of Microsoft remain uncertain. It also remains uncertain if the same activation process can be used on computer that went through major upgrades.

The price of the upgrade license also remains uncertain once the promotional period ends. A new license for the Home edition of Windows 10 is priced at $119 while the Pro Edition has a price tag of $199. The lenient upgrade policy of Microsoft is considered sensible since the company is aiming to allow more people to use the new OS.
