Womb transplant Brings Hope to Women wanting Children

The world’s successful womb transplant was conducted by doctors and medical experts at the Akdeniz University Hospital in Antalya, Turkey. It will be the second one performed in the world but the first one failed in 2000. This breakthrough will raise the hopes of millions of women around the world to bear a child. The operation was successfully transplanted by doctors last August 9.

Derya Sert was the lucky woman who received the womb of a deceased donor. Sert, housewife, has been in the hospital for 6 months already. Sert, just 21 years old, was unlucky to be born without a uterus. She is among the 1 in every 5,000 females around the world born without uterus.

A mixture of excitement and happiness was felt by Sert. We can have our own baby if God is willing. She then added by saying she was not afraid of the surgery and had never thought about the suffering and pain throughout the operation. She couldn’t believe the day she was waiting has certainly arrived. The feeling is indescribable, it’s like my own womb, she exclaimed joyously.

The support from her family and relatives was endless, helping her find the medical solution to solve her problem. Sert’s womb transplant was the second in the world but currently the first successful one. The first attempt in 2000 failed due to heavy clotting, doctors had to remove the organ after 99 days. The difference is that, in 2000, they used the womb of a living donor.

Munire Erman Akar, gynecologist and part of the medical team in Turkey, said that it will be a handicap to use the womb of a living donor. The medical team is very confident that they have conducted the world’s first successful womb transplant and overcome all the problems so far. Although the tissue and organ was not rejected by the recipient’s body, they would declare the surgery as successful once the woman will bear a child.
